The Dream of a Better Life

One of our former students, a young woman from Ebo Town who attended our schools for 15 years, has been reported missing by her sister. She was living in Mauritania, a country not far from The Gambia, but in search of a better life, she set out for Europe. She left in early July, but since then her family has been unable to contact her. They fear she may be one of the many who drown while crossing the Mediterranean.

It’s a growing problem that so many young people dream of going to Europe. It’s hard to find a job in The Gambia, and the grass seems so much greener on the other side of the fence. That’s why they take risks and head north in droves, with the goal of earning money to secure a home and a future in The Gambia. Unfortunately, things don’t work out that way, and many disappear along the way. We’re keeping our fingers crossed that our former student is safe and sound!
