Sports Day in Ebo Town
Published March 7, 2024

There was a lot of excitement recently when a sports day was held for Nursery 1, 2, and 3 at Butterfly Friends School in Ebo Town. We started at 9:00 a.m., but before the competitions could begin, running lanes were marked out in the sand and watered so they wouldn’t wash away so easily. Once everything was in place, the school’s 250 students poured out, and the competitions could begin.
Teacher Darbou from New Jeshwang welcomed everyone, and each grade selected its representatives to form three teams in the colors yellow, green, and red. Three standard running events were held: the 60-meter dash, the 100-meter dash, and the relay. In addition, there were competitions in egg races, sack races, partner races where two students had one leg tied together, and races with a bucket of water on their heads.
Perhaps the most engaging event was the traditional musical chairs game, where there was one fewer chair than the number of participants. Then the music started, and when it stopped, the participants had to find a chair to sit on as quickly as possible. Whoever didn’t manage to sit down lost that round and had to stand on the sidelines. Then another chair was removed, and the game continued until only one participant remained, sitting on the last chair. That person was the winner. The teachers also joined in this game, much to the delight of the students.
Finally, there was an awards ceremony, and the green Nursery 2 class won.
Seen through critical Norwegian eyes, the day was probably more chaotic than we’re used to, but what does that matter? It was a day filled with laughter and joy.
And as the students began heading home, they all seemed happy and grateful.
