An education leads to a job!

Butterfly Friends, and especially Executive Director Anbjørg Juliussen, are very well known in the parts of The Gambia where we have schools. Everywhere we drive, we hear people calling out “Madam Ann”—that’s what they call Anbjørg down here—and they’re always eager to tell us who they are and what they’re up to.

One day we stopped by a supermarket to buy some food. Then we heard that familiar shout, and we turned around to see who was calling out. It was Awa Seaka, a former student at our schools. She now works at this supermarket and was very proud that she had a steady job that provided her with a much-needed income.

Another day, we went out to buy a few small items we needed to fix something at the school in New Jeshwang. That’s when we ran into the two proud boys shown in the photo on the right. We don’t remember their names, but they told us they now had good jobs helping to build new houses. Yet another example of how education is the path out of poverty.
