When happiness and love come together!
Published December 23, 2023
There is a happiness so great that it makes you forget all the hardships you’ve been through in life. Mantabeng Sanyang can certainly attest to that. The deaf-mute boy had virtually no future as he wandered alone through the narrow streets of New Jeshwang. Life was hard enough for all the young people who had their senses intact, but it was far worse for someone who could neither hear nor speak.
Fortunately, however, life is not determined by fate, but rather by probabilities—and thus also by possibilities.
The story goes that one day Montabeng discovered that a school was to be built in the neighborhood, and he immediately offered to dig trenches for pouring the foundations. Over the next few years, he not only dug meters upon meters of trenches but also poured all the concrete blocks for both the elementary and middle schools—
48,000 of them, and probably far more than that!
Soon, word spread about this guy who was skilled with sand and cement and who balanced wheelbarrow loads on narrow planks, like a circus performer. Later, when the schools were completed, he was given responsibility for all the keys—and thus also the title of caretaker. By then, he had also converted a former warehouse into a home, where he lived for many years.
Montabeng’s greatest wish was to get married and have children. Eventually, he found love—or love found him. Today, he is the father of a beautiful little girl, and he is said to be the happiest of all the janitors in The Gambia.
