New Roof at the School in Brikama
Published May 14, 2026

When I arrived in The Gambia in late January of this year, I quickly noticed that something was different. There was water in places where I had never seen water before—large puddles, even though it had been several months since the rainy season had ended. Normally, they would have dried up by then, but that hadn’t happened as it had in previous years. I asked why that was the case, and was told that the rainy season had been much worse than usual.
Then I visited our schools in Brikama. As usual, there were a few things that needed maintenance and repair, but I quickly realized that their biggest concern was something I couldn’t handle on my own. The roof of the main building had rusted through in many places, and the water
damage was becoming significant (see the photos on the left). There was only one thing to do: tear off the entire roof and install new roofing panels.
This major project is now complete. The entire old roof was removed and replaced with roofing panels of much higher quality than before. Now a new rainy season can come without causing the teachers and students at the school any significant concern.
Thank you to all of you who donated a little extra money so that this work could be done.
