Rainy Season and a New School Year

Published October 16, 2024

In Norway, we’re used to schoolchildren having their summer vacation from around June 20 to mid-August, but that’s not the case in The Gambia. There, they attend school throughout June and July, while August and September are their vacation months. Unfortunately for them, this is right in the middle of the rainy season, so they can’t enjoy nice weather during their vacation; on the other hand, it wouldn’t be possible to hold classes when the rain is at its worst.
At that time, the “streets” in the areas where they live are completely flooded, and it’s almost impossible to get from one place to another.

Take a look at the photos on the right, and then watch the video showing the same place during the rainy season. There’s water everywhere.

Now the students have started a new school year again, and they have proudly received new books and school supplies. The top row of photos shows all the books
that have been purchased for this school year. There are a total of 54 boxes, each containing 180 books—just over 9,700 books in all.
