Repairs and Renovations
Published October 8, 2026
Over the past few months, repairs and improvements have been made at both the schools and the health center. Here are some of the things that have been done.
Many small streams
In recent years, there have been repeated floods at our largest school in New Jeshwang. During the rainy season, a lot of water collects in nearby areas that are slightly higher than the school. Eventually, the water has had nowhere else to go but down toward the school. There, it has seeped through the gates and flooded the entire outdoor area. That has now come to an end. Before this year’s rainy season, Samba Touray, our top leader in The Gambia, arranged for ditches to be dug to divert the water, as well as thresholds to be installed at all doors and gates to prevent water from entering. The improvements worked perfectly. This year, water wasn’t a problem at the school.

New Sanitation Facility
When Samba Touray stopped by to check on the health center in early August, he was in for a surprise. It turned out that the people in the local community surrounding the health center, out of gratitude for everything the health center does for them free of charge, had pooled their money and built a small sanitation building with running water and a flush toilet. We thank them and tip our hats to them!

Gate Repair and New Wall
The wall surrounding the health center has deteriorated significantly over the past few years, to the point where it was becoming dangerous. If we were really unlucky, it could have collapsed, with the risk of injury that would have entailed. Therefore, it was decided that we would tear down the damaged section of the wall, repair the gate and its foundations, and build a new, secure wall in the same spot where it previously stood. No sooner said than done. Here are photos of the new wall with its reinforced foundation.
