World Water Day is celebrated annually on March 22. This year, the United Nations, in collaboration with UNLEASH Ambassadors in the EU region and Global Action with Kids, coordinated the program under the leadership of Dr. Sisira S. Withanachi, a senior research fellow and project manager at the University of Kassel in Germany. It was an online event dedicated to celebrating World Water Day 2021. The theme for this year’s celebration was “Valuing Water”; the focus and voice were on children all over the world. In The Gambia, only one school was selected to represent the country: ABC Upper and Senior Secondary School in New Jeshwang. Various other countries were also invited, including Ghana, Indonesia, Palestine, Vietnam, Nepal, Georgia, Mongolia, Azerbaijan, Germany, Mexico, Sri Lanka, and others. The program was moderated by Muhammed Ogista, a student at ABC Upper and Senior Secondary School in New Jeshwang, The Gambia, and Tharuki, a student from Sri Lanka. Various experts were invited to give short presentations on the topic “Valuing Water,” including Mr. Hans Roth, a local politician from the grassroots local governance body in his hometown of Kassel, Germany; Dr. Engin, an earth scientist by training; Dr. Olcay, a global leader in water policy; and others.
ABC Upper and Senior Secondary School presented various activities during the program, including a debate on the topic “Is every drop of water a waste or not?”, a song about the importance of water, a skit, and a short poem.
The program concluded with a take-home message and a vote of thanks from the moderators, Muhammed Ogista, a student from The Gambia, and Tharuki, a student from Sri Lanka.
