From pregnancy to birth — and beyond

The health centre is led day to day by midwife Sukai Jallow and has 12 employees, among them three midwives. The centre has 12 beds including a maternity ward, its own laboratory and a dental clinic.

Pregnant women receive free antenatal check-ups and vitamin injections, and the centre follows up around a thousand women in its family planning programme. Newborns are registered and given birth certificates — a prerequisite for schooling later on.

Six times a month, vaccines and vitamins are distributed. The centre also offers cancer screening with onward referral, home visits, dental treatment and general consultations.

Medicines and supporters

Medicines and supplies are financed partly through support from the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, along with contraceptives, malaria medication and mosquito nets.

Regular donors carry much of the running cost — among them a donor group in Arendal giving 3,000 kroner a month, and supporters in Tromsø giving 1,000 kroner a month. As a health sponsor at NOK 300 a month, you help keep the centre open.
