ABC Senior Secondary School

The senior secondary school in New Jeshwang completes Butterfly Friends' educational ladder: three years of preschool, six of primary, three of lower secondary — and finally three years of senior secondary. Fifteen unbroken school years in total.

The school has 12 classrooms, two offices and a dedicated chemistry room, and offers 3 study tracks: science, commerce and arts. Head teacher Manneh leads a school that year after year ranks among The Gambia's best in exam results.

Butterfly Friends built the school and ran it for the first years. For financial reasons the Gambian education authorities took over day-to-day operations, while the organisation still follows the school closely — and hopes to take the operation back when finances allow.

The school was made possible by major contributions from, among others, Rosthaug upper secondary school in Norway — which alone raised 600,000 kroner — the Red Cross, Roligheden school, Vikersund school, Sigdal lower secondary school, and individual donors such as Marianne and Steinar Langeland and Arne Bakke.
