The school on the north bank

The preschool in Bakalarr opened in January 2009 — with 60 visiting Norwegian sponsors present on opening day. The school has 3 classrooms, an office and a kitchen with a dining area and running water.

Bakalarr is a poor village on the north bank of the Gambia River, which has recently been connected to the electricity grid. The school is one of the village's few fixed points, and for the children it is the first step towards further schooling.

Head teacher Tida Ceesay leads the school together with three teachers, a watchman and kitchen staff.
